The Plucky Squire (PC) Preview

A magical journey

Get ready for a delightful journey through a world where imagination and adventure collide in The Plucky Squire. This charming game is turning heads with its innovative gameplay mechanics, captivating graphics, and enchanting music. I was lucky enough to play roughly half of the game and can confirm this is a sure fire GOTY contender…whenever it comes out.

The Plucky Squire introduces a refreshing twist to classic platforming and puzzle-solving. You play as the brave squire Jot, who gains the ability to leap between 2D and 3D worlds. Imagine shifting from a beautifully hand-drawn storybook environment into a fully realized 3D realm, where the rules and physics change dynamically. This mechanic not only keeps the gameplay fresh but also offers clever solutions to puzzles and challenges. The game encourages creativity, as players must strategically use their ability to transition between dimensions to navigate through obstacles and unravel secrets. The first time Jot emerges from the pages of his story book he finds himself in a strange land. What becomes quickly apparent is that we are on a child’s desk, one who collects beetles and lets them run around on his desk.

The visual style of The Plucky Squire is a feast for the eyes. Its graphics combine charming 2D illustrations with rich 3D environments, blending the aesthetics of classic storybooks with modern, immersive worlds. The transition between the flat, hand-drawn art and the vibrant, three-dimensional landscapes is seamless, creating a unique and visually stunning experience. Each level is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, making the game feel like a living, breathing storybook. There is so much to this game that I do not want to spoil just know that the narrative here is a charming affair, one that’s filled with friends and an evil wizard.

I would be remiss if I didn’t talk about the incredible musical score in The Plucky Squire. The game’s soundtrack is as enchanting as its visuals. Featuring a blend of whimsical and epic compositions, the music complements the game’s atmosphere perfectly. From playful, upbeat tunes that accompany your heroic leaps to more serene, melodic pieces that underscore the narrative, the soundtrack enhances the emotional and immersive aspects of the game. Each track is designed to draw you deeper into the story and enrich your adventure.

I have been waiting for The Plucky Squire since it was first announced in June of 2022; which feels like a lifetime ago now. After my extended time with what I am thinking is a near-final build; The Plucky Squire is shaping up to be a must-play for fans of inventive platformers. With its unique gameplay, stunning visuals, and captivating music, it promises an unforgettable experience that blends the magic of storytelling with the thrill of exploration.

Terrence spends his time going where no one has gone before mostly. But when not planning to take over the galaxy, he spends his time raising Chocobo and trying to figure out just how the sarlaac could pull Boba Fett’s ship with its engines firing FULL BLAST into it’s maw with relative ease; yet it struggled with Han Solo who was gripping *checks notes* SAND!
