Age of Mythology: Retold – Immortal Pillars (PC) Review

More Mythology is a good thing

Age of Mythology has long stood as a classic in the world of real-time strategy games, blending resource management, tactical warfare, and mythological elements into a seamless experience. The Immortal Pillars expansion, part of the Age of Mythology: Retold edition, takes this formula to greater heights by introducing the rich and vibrant world of Chinese mythology. Packed with new gods, mythological units, a decent campaign, and stunning visuals, this expansion offers fans an unforgettable journey into the legends of ancient China.

At the heart of Immortal Pillars lies the introduction of the Chinese pantheon. Players can now choose to align with deities such as Nüwa, the benevolent goddess of creation, or Chiyou, the fearsome war god. Each god not only offers distinct strategic benefits but also shapes the way players approach the game. For instance, Nüwa’s focus on creation and harmony provides bonuses to economic growth and infrastructure, while Chiyou’s warlike nature enhances military power and aggressive tactics.

The expansion introduces a host of mythological units, some of which I had never even heard of from Chinese folklore. The Yinglong, a mighty rain dragon, which flies thru the sky and is absolutely beautiful visually. Celestial warriors, ghostly fox spirits, and other mythical beings add a sense of wonder to battle, each equipped with unique abilities that make them invaluable in both offense and defense. Seeing them add new units and deities to this decades old game brought a huge smile to my face. While not my favorite faction, I did fall in love with the Chinese pantheon.

For those who don’t play these games for PVP battles, you will be glad to know that this expansion includes a campaign that transports players into the heart of Chinese mythology. Drawing inspiration from classic tales and historical legends, the storyline is a blend of intrigue, heroism, and divine intervention. Each mission feels well crafted, and delves into the mythology of the Chinese pantheon. Whether it’s defending a legendary city from mythological invaders or venturing into the heavens to seek the favor of the gods, the campaign had some really cool moments throughout.

Age of Mythology: Retold – Immortal Pillars is a great expansion for the series and feels like a celebration of Chinese mythology by not only showcasing excellent storytelling but also building on the top-notch strategic elements from its original release. By introducing the rich tapestry of Chinese legends and pairing it with refined gameplay and the stunning visuals, the expansion successfully reinvigorates the classic game for a new generation. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a newcomer, Immortal Pillars offers tons of improvements over the base game and more to love about the Age of Mythology.

Terrence spends his time going where no one has gone before mostly. But when not planning to take over the galaxy, he spends his time raising Chocobo and trying to figure out just how the sarlaac could pull Boba Fett’s ship with its engines firing FULL BLAST into it’s maw with relative ease; yet it struggled with Han Solo who was gripping *checks notes* SAND!
