Don’t get me wrong, I love tower defence games. But in this day and age you have to come up with something new and fresh, because if you don’t you end up just like any other TD game.
Christmas Defence has tried to give the genre a new look but has failed in almost every department. There is nothing new or exciting in Xmas Defence, just old ideas that have been given the winter wonderland makeover.
As per usual it is a top down, by the number TD game. Place your starting weapons along a pre-defined map and wait for the evil little buggers come to try and steal Santa’s sack! The weapons are ’old hat’ at this point. Shooter, slow, bomber etc, they have done nothing to spice things up. The iPhone and iPad are perfect devices for this type of game and there are developers out there that have really made it work and breathed new life in to the genre. It’s such a shame that there are so many other developers out there that are just trying to cash in.
The sound effects become extremely annoying after just a short while and the graphics look awful, they are clearly not taking advantage of the hardware.
There are no extra modes here, just 14 maps to choose from, with 4 different difficultly levels. All of the maps are playable from the get go so there is no sense of progression either.
This game seems to be a half-arsed cash in of both TD games and Christmas. With games such as Fieldrunners and Tower Madness on the App store there is no reason for you to waste your money on this, unless of course you are a die hard fan of the genre.
