FOR THE SAUSAGE CORPS

Not every game has to have some groundbreaking gimmick, or epic story; sometimes simplicity can be fun. Clearly, they got that memo at Hound Picked Games because despite the giggles that my immaturity lets loose from its latest games title; Dogfight: A Sausage Bomber Story doesn’t offer all those bells and whistles bit it is simple fun.

MSRP: $17.99
Platforms: Xbox (reviewed), PlayStation, Switch, PC
Price I’d Pay: $17.99

In Dogfight, players will take on the persona of one of four heroes that are sent out in their fighter planes to curb an uprising. Taking place years after our heroes won the great Sausage war, the Sausage Corps find themselves under attack from the diabolical and probably healthy Vega Nation. There isn’t a lot of story here honestly and that’s alright for a fast paced, action heavy shmup. What Dogfight does have is lots of comedy, but if anyone dislikes sausage puns then they’re probably going to get annoyed with these jokes really quick, but I honestly chuckled more than I thought I would.

In Dogfight players (and their friends as the game offers local co-op) will control their jets dodging brightly colored bullets and the like. Each of the pilots also has a special ability that can be used to turn the tide of a battle. I was kind of disappointed that the only weapons that were in fact sausages were the bombs, I mean let me throw some sausages at a plane! There are a large variety of weapons to use against the Vega Nation with a total of 250 different combinations possible, of course these will be drip fed to players as they progress the game’s short story.

I was delighted by the bright colored graphics on display in Dogfight, the dark lines and the bright colors really popped on the screen. Each of the vehicles and enemies and especially the bosses are well detailed for the art style, I found myself getting distracted at parts because I was looking at the details on a ship instead of trying to blow it up. Even more impressive is the fact that the sprites and backgrounds are all hand drawn in the game. Another bright spot is the music, which again is something I wouldn’t have expected from a shmup. Plus, I love this new trend of developers ensuring there are accessibility features in their games, being able to use auto fire and disable some more distracting elements of the background will be a God send for some.

Aside from the giggles I get every time I have to say Dogfight: A Sausage Bomber Story, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed my time with it. Not usually a fan of the shmups but the charming graphics and many sausage puns won me over on this one. It’s not a perfect game but if you enjoy Sausages and the technology they can create, then I’d recommend Dogfight: A Sausage Bomber Story.

Terrence spends his time going where no one has gone before mostly. But when not planning to take over the galaxy, he spends his time raising Chocobo and trying to figure out just how the sarlaac could pull Boba Fett’s ship with its engines firing FULL BLAST into it’s maw with relative ease; yet it struggled with Han Solo who was gripping *checks notes* SAND!
