Looney Tunes: Wacky World of Sports (XSX) Review

That’s mediocre folks!

Every single thing about Looney Tunes: Wacky World of Sports sounds great to me on paper. From the cartoon visual aesthetic to the arcade-style sports games, this is something I should be playing over and over with friends and family. Needless to say, I went in with lofty expectations. After spending some time with this title, I can safely say things did not quite pan out the way I had hoped. The game took a wrong turn at Albuquerque extremely fast.

This game is exactly what you think it is. There are four different sports to play with a hefty amount of characters to play as. We get tennis, basketball, gold, and soccer as our events. As for characters, all the familiar faces are here including Bugs, Daffy, Porky, and Sylvester. There are also a host of non-playable characters including Foghorn Leghorn, Hector, and Marvin the Martian. They nailed it when it came to the presentation for sure. Everyone looks and sounds great.

The shooting mechanic just feels bad.

While the game looks and sounds great, that is kind of where it ends. As I tackled each sport, it felt like each one was a little less polished than the last. I kicked off with soccer, which is extremely simple. Movement feels a little clunky and taking shots feels like it takes too long to wind up. There are special shots that can be earned through a meter, I normally got one, maybe two of those shots per game. The keeper is also a brick wall, it took me a long time to score goals. The CPU is also extremely aggressive. This game was fun once or twice before losing its appeal.

Next up we have golf. This was probably the most enjoyable of all four sports. It consists of the typical two click mechanic and lining up shots feels fine. There are little shortcuts around the courses that are challenging to hit but shave off at least two strokes. I watched the CPU nail these regularly, while taking normal shots aiming right for the rough. It made zero sense.

The third sport was tennis. I wish I had more to say about this one, but it is just kind of there. The serving feels fine, but the back and forth is stiff and feels off. My CPU partner barely moved while the other team was about the same. It is hard to make video game tennis feel boring, but they managed to do it. I was impressed that they could take such a sure-fire thing and make it so mundane.

My CPU character may move this time…

Finally, basketball might be the worst of them all. Shooting just feels awful and once I figured out the mechanic, I could nail a three-pointer every shot. The movement tries to mimic something like NBA Jam and fails miserably. Nothing about this sport was fun and every time it came up again, I just sighed.

This game should have been a slam dunk (pun intended) when it comes to having fun. I adore Looney Tunes and all the sports here have several templates to mimic. Somehow they made just about every single one worse than its counterparts. It is almost impressive how off some of these feel. I wanted to love this game, and just came away so disappointed. I do not recommend picking this one up, even on a deep sale.
