Neva (XSX) Review

Simply Beautiful

Neva is a beautifully crafted game that will touch your heart and captivate your imagination. Developed by Nomada Studio, known for their previous masterpiece Gris, Neva tells a touching story of companionship and growth in a world filled with darkness and mystery. The game follows Alba, a warrior, and her loyal wolf pup, Neva, as they embark on a journey to save their world from a spreading corruption. The bond between Alba and Neva is the heart of the game, and it’s beautifully portrayed through stunning visuals and a heartfelt narrative.

The game’s art direction is nothing short of spectacular. Neva employs a watercolor aesthetic that breathes life into its world with vibrant colors and intricate details. Each frame feels like a meticulously crafted painting, drawing players into a dreamlike realm that is as beautiful as it is foreboding. The visual storytelling is exceptional, using color and composition to convey emotion and narrative depth without the need for extensive dialogue. Alba speaks few words other than calling out to Neva, and it all works wonderfully.

The narrative is deeply poignant, exploring themes of companionship, sacrifice, and the resilience of the human spirit. As Alba and Neva traverse through a world enshrouded in darkness, their bond grows stronger, and their journey becomes a testament to the power of love and determination. One of the most remarkable aspects of Neva is its emotional depth. The game excels in creating moments of joy, sorrow, and triumph, making it a truly immersive experience. The bond between Alba and Neva is the heart of the game, and it is portrayed with such authenticity and tenderness that players can’t help but become emotionally invested in their journey. The narrative is filled with meaningful encounters and poignant revelations, leaving a lasting impression long after the game is over.

Neva combines elements of puzzle-solving, platforming, and combat, creating a well-rounded and immersive gameplay experience. The puzzles are thoughtfully designed, requiring players to use both Alba’s and Neva’s unique abilities to overcome obstacles and progress through the game. As Neva grows from a timid pup into a formidable companion, the gameplay evolves, introducing new mechanics and strategies that keep the experience fresh and engaging.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the excellent soundtrack that Neva uses. Neva features a hauntingly beautiful score that perfectly complements its visual and emotional tone. The music swells and recedes in harmony with the narrative, enhancing the impact of key moments and drawing players deeper into the story.

Neva is quite the masterpiece of a video game. With its breathtaking art direction, engaging gameplay and moving narrative it is a game that will resonate with players on a personal level much like this years Tales of Kenzara: Zau. I have always heard great things about Nomada Studio’s Gris but I never game it a shot. Based on how good Neva is, I really feel like I am missing out and plan to correct that mistake in the very near future.

Terrence spends his time going where no one has gone before mostly. But when not planning to take over the galaxy, he spends his time raising Chocobo and trying to figure out just how the sarlaac could pull Boba Fett’s ship with its engines firing FULL BLAST into it’s maw with relative ease; yet it struggled with Han Solo who was gripping *checks notes* SAND!
