Throne and Liberty (XSX) Review

Trials and Labors

Throne and Liberty is a visually stunning MMORPG that brings a lot to the table with its lush environments and old-school PvP gameplay. However, its overly complicated mechanics could prove to be a significant barrier for many players. I usually love these types of games but even I was overwhelmed.

The game’s mechanics, while intricate and detailed, more often than not; just feel complicated. The loot distribution system, for instance, is needlessly complex. Players must navigate through various modes and guild activities to understand how loot is allocated, which can be confusing and frustrating. This complexity can detract from the overall enjoyment of the game, especially for casual players who just want to dive in and have fun without having to decipher convoluted systems. I firmly fall into this category anymore, the layers of complexity at play in Throne and Liberty just wasn’t for me.

Another significant pain point is the skill progression system. While it offers a vast array of abilities and customization options, it often feels overly convoluted. Players might find themselves spending hours just to optimize their skill sets and figure out the best combinations, detracting from the time they could be spending on actual gameplay. When going through the narrative and trying to unlock new skills, this just needlessly slows things down and requires too much grinding. The in-game economy also suffers from the game’s complexity. The various currencies, resources, and crafting materials can be overwhelming to manage, and the lack of clear explanations can leave players feeling lost.

Despite these issues, Throne and Liberty has a lot of potential. Its beautiful graphics and well-designed content make the game world feel truly alive. The attention to detail in the environments, character designs, and animations is impressive, and the game’s lore and storytelling are engaging. However, the overly complicated mechanics can make it difficult for casual players to fully enjoy what the game has to offer. Simplifying some of these systems could go a long way in making the game more accessible and enjoyable for a wider audience.

Overall, while Throne and Liberty is a visually impressive and ambitious MMO, its overly complicated mechanics can be a significant barrier for many players. Simplifying some of these systems could help make the game more accessible and enjoyable for a wider audience. Developer, NCSOFT has done an excellent job in creating a rich and immersive world and I have enjoyed many of their past MMO’s, but the complexity of the mechanics needs to be addressed to ensure that players can fully appreciate and enjoy the experience.

Terrence spends his time going where no one has gone before mostly. But when not planning to take over the galaxy, he spends his time raising Chocobo and trying to figure out just how the sarlaac could pull Boba Fett’s ship with its engines firing FULL BLAST into it’s maw with relative ease; yet it struggled with Han Solo who was gripping *checks notes* SAND!
