Turtle Beach Stealth 700 Gen 3 (Hardware) Review

Dual sounds

It is getting harder and harder to distinguish headsets these days. We are at the saturation point where most of them feature parity in most ways, and really how much can you do with LEDs on something you don’t really ever see? What I can say is that Turtle Beach has always ranked among my favorites in the two most important categories, sound quality and comfort, and their new 700 series once again meets both of these criteria. What is interesting though is the new feature it packs alongside it. The ability to work across multiple devices with its new multi-dongle approach.

The Gen 3 model of the Stealth headset is fairly similar to past versions. It has a flip up mic, three dials for volume control and game and chat mix. It connects simultaneously with the dongle and Bluetooth. So, for those parts it is about the same when it comes to design. It sounds just as good, if not a little better than the last entry. This is a very solid mid-range headset that sounds fantastic and is comfortable to wear, especially for people who wear glasses. Turtle Beach has perfected their craft, and they still are the first headset I recommend when anyone is looking to invest in one.

MSRP: $199.99

Price I’d Pay: $199.99

So why would anyone want to upgrade to this set? Well, the answer boils down to how many different platforms you play on. The Gen 3 comes with the ability to hot-swap connections with the tap of a button. The unit comes with two dongles which can be used in just about any device you could imagine. For my tests I mostly focused on PS5 and Xbox Series X. Once I set up all I had to do was tap the button located on the headset to switch which system was active, it was fairly painless. This is great for people who don’t want to keep a separate headset for each console.

This didn’t come without its caveats though. For starters setting it up in the app was a pain. I had to have both dongles plugged in and the consoles powered on to connect to the app and set me settings. Then the update process failed four straight times about 70% through. It was frustrating. On PS5 I also ran into issues with the auto switching of audio, but that is on the Sony side more than Turtle Beach. Once I got everything setup though, it was very simple to swap between the two.

Reviewing so many headsets come with its downsides though. Let’s talk about dongles. Yes, this is relevant because this setup uses two of them. These things are small and easy to misplace. Also, can we start marking these things with the headset model, so we know which goes with which? Yeah, this is mostly a reviewer problem, but it would be nice if headsets all came with a little compartment where we could store the dongle when not in use. Or better yet can companies allow their direct connect technology, so we don’t have to deal with dongles anymore. OK, I promise I am done with my dongle rant.

Moving on to everything else, once again this thing sounds fantastic. TB has always nailed this for me. Their pre-sets are great and I rarely have to mess with custom setups. The build quality is also excellent. The ear cups feel good in long sessions, and the headband didn’t feel too tight. The battery also lasts forever. It claims 80 hours on the box, and I believe it. I used it for quite a while over the course of a couple weeks, and never needed to charge it. It also charges extremely fast, so I could net a few hours in just a handful of minutes. This thing is built to last, and for most people it would be the only headset you would ever need.

Turtle Beach has yet another winner on its hands with the Gen 3 version of the 700. I have been using TB headsets for two decades and they continue to impress me to this day. For those wanting one that works on multiple devices with an outstanding battery life and super audio quality, the 700 continues to punch above its weight in these departments. It is so easy to recommend these to just about everyone not wanting to break the bank on a quality headset.
