Look out, the Inquisitor has arrived

Aside from one or two other games, I’m not overly familiar with Warhammer either the standard or 40k versions. That’s not to say I don’t mind playing a video based in the universes, so that’s why I was willing to give Inquisitor Martyr a shot. Considering this is a Diablo-style game, that sounds like it is right up my alley.

So, to start off, this is obviously an older game. Originally released back in 2018, players take on the role of the Inquisitor, who is investigating a disturbance on a derelict ship that is sending out a distress signal. It blows up into an even bigger story with a threat to the entire star chart. The Ultimate Edition comes with everything released for the game so far, including the Prophecy DLC which adds a new campaign story, areas, and a new class focusing on summoning.

The game itself plays a bit like a mix of a few action RPGs. I get the sense of Victor Vran where there are stylea of weapons that play differently rather than the different classes playing differently due to skills and abilities. There are some changes to gameplay based on class, but it all depends on what the player equips and how they spec their specific inquisitor.

The story is full of 40k lingo and story beats with the voice acting being both fantastic and completely hammy that works for the source material.

While the gameplay feels a bit like a simple ordeal, the builds and character specs are definitely not. I am a min-max nerd when it comes to RPGs, but this game made me give some confused looks. It’s not confusing, but complex. Tons of skill trees to choose from, each with their own requirements. Players can side with certain factions for even more bonuses. It’s a lot here and one that can be daunting to casual RPG players.

There is a lot of replay value here as well with modifiers for difficulty and specific loot drops that can be tailored to the player based on the challenge they decide to go with. It’s a nice touch. Granted, players looking only to play though the story can do that as well.

There is also a full co-op mode for multiplayer action. Ramping up the difficulty with other players can be both rewarding for loot drops as well as a gory blast.

This new ultimate edition is also optimized for the new generation of consoles. Playing on the Series X, it looked nice and never dipped in framerate.

Inquisitor Martyr is a fun action RPG that I think fans of the genre will enjoy. The moment-to-moment combat is fine and serviceable, but the true meat of the game is in the builds and skill trees. So much so that it can be a little daunting to the player. If you are looking for something to hold you over until Diablo 4, you have something here to sink your teeth into, and if you’re a Warhammer 40k fan, it makes the package even better.
